GIIS QT: Year 2006 Accounts Highlights

To contact us Click HERE
[This summary is derived from the previous post by K.Bala (that post page has been removed). We apologize for any inconvenience caused. The same data appears on this post in numerical form. If anyone has any objection to this , please feel free to add a comment to explain the objection. We wish to retain our right to discuss the data without violating anyone else's rights. -Ed]
Question: How accurate or reliable is this data ?
Positives: The data matches up with the lease amount paid to SLA for GIIS Queenstown (exactly known), and our own estimate of tuition fees. Transfers to GIIS New Zealand, GIIS Japan, GIIS Thailand and GIIS Malaysia match up with the timeline where expansions were announced (2006).
Negatives/Doubtfuls:
Small debits shown going to GIIS Australia, GIIS China and GIIS US ($30 only): These were pointed out to be non-existent. However, they could be just names of expense accounts. Amount paid to Julia Gabriel for Speech and Drama (about S$107K) has not been verified (help wanted). Transfer of about S$ 5,200 to IIM Bangalore matches timeline (2006) but can only be verified by contacting IIM Bangalore authorities (help wanted).
It is impossible to say with 100% certainty, but we are about 95% certain that the figures are real. But we encourage you to do your own analysis and independent verification.

Question: Why are these data relevant to parents ?
Answer:
The discussions on the fee hike are constrained by lack of data on costs including the campus lease/rental charge, bus service charges etc which were blamed as the major factors for the fee hike. Parents wish to have the data so that they can analyse the numbers and be well informed before making their judgement on the hike.
We request GIIS/GIF not to withhold information which is important to parents.

The highlights for GIIS Queenstown (Year 2006) are as follows:

GIIS QT has "transferred" or "donated" S$ 1.94 million to GIF in 2006.
GIIS QT has transferred S$ 415,327 to GIIS New Zealand.
GIIS QT has paid about S$5,200 to IIM Bangalore.
GIIS QT has paid $640,368 to Indian Schools Pte Ltd.
GIIS QT has received about S$8.995 million in Tuition Fees.
GIIS QT has received about S$2.4 million in Bus Fees.
GIIS QT has paid about S$1.38 milion as Bus Payments.
GIIS QT has paid S$1,289044 as lease (rental) to SLA.
GIIS QT has spent about S$167 K as cleaning expenditures
GIIS QT has spent about S$292 K on advertising
GIIS QT has spent about S$61 K on guests and dignitaries.
GIIS QT turned a profit of about S$ 3.8 million after all the outflows were considered (including transfers as noted above).

[Images removed 25/03/2008, see numbers above instead -Ed]

We request GIF to refute the above accounts if they are wrong, and publish their true accounts. (We have always welcomed GIIS/GIF management to join this blog)

A request to all commentators: Please avoid personal attacks. Thank you.

What is the credibility of the financial information presented here? Is the originator of this blog a decendent of Raja Bhoj that one should believe his/her word?

What is the proof that these are indeed figures from GIIS's accounts?
Anyone could type up these figures, put red markings, scan and post them on the blog!

Mr. Bala, do other schools in Singapore make their accounts open to the parents of their students? Why are you singling out GIF to make their accounts public?

Have you seen DPS's accounts or NPS's accounts?

helper said...

Good point. This is the way we should all think !

The lease amount tallies correctly with SLA government figures. The bus fee collection and tuition fees also tallies roughly. We should approach MMI etc for the other parts as suggested.

If AT&Co get worked up by these revelations and send 'trolls' to sling mud in this forum, and 'thugs' to abuse suspects.. then we know for sure these figures are real !

If AT&Co publishes the true accounts, then we will immediately know whether these numbers are correct or not... But knowing AT&Co... they will never publish the truth !

So we parents are in a fix. Who to believe ?

Taking about 2000 parents together "donated" about $2 mil to GIF, then each "donated" about S$1000 a year. I would like to know.. how did GIF spend the money ?

Yes credibility of data is questionable but why to compare with DPS and NPS ? Do they claim to be Non profit organization?
Don't forget that our motive here is to have a better GIIS not better NPS or DPS. The discussion about account has started because of the unjustified increment in school fees and Bus fees. We have the right to know where the money is being used.

[Dear Students, We have noted the contents of the comments posted by 'Infernus' on this blog, and the sentiments expressed therein. We had to then delete the actual text of your comments, mainly due to the "linguistic style" employed ;)

We certainly understand that, as students, you do have -
1. your own issues and concerns to resolve, and,
2. your own views you wish to air and discuss.

As regards the first (your burning issues), please bring them to the attention of your parents or teachers. Your goal should be to convince your parents to take up these issues on your behalf, and try to get them solved! As for the second part, the best way to air your views and discuss them with other students is by setting up your own blog. If you set up one and provide us the link, we will review and consider placing a link to your blog from this site.

We really don't mind an occasional direct contribution from students if it shows grasp and maturity (age is not the bar... but the developmental stage at which your faculties are, might be! But we also realize that there is no better way to develop than by expressing your ideas and engaging in discussions). As parents, we will only be proud to see a well-thought-through and well-expressed comment that eschews street language, on any topic that is of interest to the general parent community.

Remember, that our intention is never to smother your views. -Ed]

Issues Posted by Infernus:
(NEW: Restored sanitised summary, 04/05/2008).
1. Korean students are being allowed the use of a mobile phone but Indian students who need to reach home as late as 8 PM are held to the no-mobile policy. IB students are given privileges, and are allowed to tuck their shirt out, etc. This is discrimination.
2. Principal Mr GSS Rao is generally rude/unfair (towards students),etc.

Some friendly parental advice on how to raise your issues and get them the attention they deserve:
1. Please avoid personal attacks and instead, focus on the issue you want to draw attention to. Focus more on the 'what' and less on the 'who'.
2. Please avoid repeated use of adjectives such as 'stupid' which, all things considered, do not mean a thing and might turn people off and make them ignore you.
3. Please think it out in your head, before you start writing or presenting your issues.
[Dear Infernus, please bring your issues to your parents' attention. -Ed].
Good Luck!

Teachers' Salary - Survey Results

To contact us Click HERE
We have now, a better idea of GIIS's pay scales for teachers, based on typical salaries paid to surveyed teachers. (Based on informal contact with several ex-teachers. Teachers holding EP (Employment Pass) were not approached for this survey).

What we find:

The seniority of the teacher (number of years of experience) makes some difference within each band, but salary generally fits into certain bands or ranges based on the level taught, i.e., KG / Primary / Secondary.

Monthly Salary Ranges (includes employee's CPF)
KG Teachers: ranges from $1250 to $1450. Typical figure is: $1300
Primary Teachers: ranges from $1500 to $1700
Secondary Teachers: ranges from $1600 to $1900, rarely touching $2000
Std XI, XII Teachers: ranges from $1800 to $2200, rarely touching $2500

Variable Pay: Additional to above, is variable pay = 20% of monthly salary.
20% of monthly pay is deducted as Variable Pay.
[Thanks to the ex-teacher, comment #3, for pointing it out the -20% and included CPF contribution]

[It is rumoured that a $50 pm salary raise was given to all teachers recently. If it is correct, it is only a 2 to 4% salary raise. These percentages are nowhere near the employee-related cost rises claimed by Kaustubh Bodhankar's high-handed fee hike announcement. -Ed.]

Dear Parents: How can we expect the school to recruit good teachers, or retain the better ones, if we pay only that much ?

Teachers' Day Wishes

To contact us Click HERE
A very happy teachers' day to all GIIS Teachers !

On behalf of all parents, we are happy to extend our Best Wishes to all teachers of GIIS Queenstown, East Coast and Balestier campuses.

Parents appreciate the many excellent and dedicated teachers who teach at GIIS. Parents and students are forever indebted to these teachers. As parents, we have very limited opportunities to express our deep appreciation to the best teachers.

Dear Parents, let us use this opportunity to write down here, our best wishes and commendations to those individual teachers who have made a difference to our child's education. (Click on the "comments" link at the bottom to add your appreciation messages -- please take care not to let out the name of the teacher).

(Please do not let out the name of the teacher whom we want to appreciate, due to the high risk involved as rival schools are on the look out for good teachers. It is OK to write: "The physics teacher of class 9C is doing a wonderful job" or "KG teacher M.S. has encouraged my child a lot" etc. Thank you for your kind co-operation in this regard).

Clarification on Indian Press Reports and GIF's email

This is a clarification regarding certain recent press reports from India (Mumbai Mirror of 15 April 2010 etc) and email sent by GIF (info@globalindian.org.sg) on 19 April 2010 with the same contents.

As you know, this blog was established as a forum for and by parents in Singapore. Comments are disabled until the matters that are sub-judice in the Singapore Civil Courts, are resolved.

The parent who was referred to (in the above email and press reports) wishes to clarify that certain falsehoods are stated and/or suggested in these reports.

The following is the true fact according to him:
This is to clarify that I have NOT implicated
  • any other parent, or
  • any current or former employee of GIIS, or
  • any current or former student of GIIS,
in any affidavit filed in the Singapore Courts.

So if you have posted anything on this blog, you should know that I have not implicated you in any way.

Garrett Thomas Dye, 17, of Trenton has been indicted for the murder of his 9-year-old adopted sister and cousin, Amy R. Dye.

The Grand Jury indicted Garrett Dye today (Feb. 18) for murder, resisting arrest and tampering with physical evidence. Documents show he has admitted to killing his sister.

Also, the rumor that Dye allegedly used a shovel was wrong. The indictment said it was a hydraulic jack handle.

Advocates Advice - Protection from Truancy Charges

To contact us Click HERE

·         Advocates Advice

I often attend school meetings for parents who are turned in for Truancy because their children with medical and/or emotional disabilities cannot attend school.

·         If your child has a disability that affects school attendance, this needs to be documented in the IEP or 504 plan for Truancy protection. Get a medical letter from your child's Pediatrician and/or Psychiatrist stating the diagnosis and reasons why school attendance will be impacted.

For example - It should be noted in the medical section of your child's IEP or 504 if you have a child with Asthma who gets frequent upper respitory infections and will have numerous absences. You should also list how and when school work will be made up.  This is particularly important in High School as some school districts do not allow over 6 missed school days per semester.

Additionally, it should be noted in the medical section of your child's IEP or 504 if you have a child with Bipolar or Anxiety and they can become unstable and can't attend school. These students may also need to be qualified for Intermittent Hospital/Homebound (HHB) services as well. This way you do not have to wait 10 days for HHB to kick in for each occurrence. It should be listed in the IEP or 504 exactly how and when HHB will be implemented. Again, this documentation will also protect a parent and student from Truancy charges.

Implementation of Hospital/Homebound services varies from state to state.  In GA, if a student has an IEP, implementation requires an IEP meeting.  So get your medical information together and request a meeting to discuss.  You can ask your school or county school district for the necessary medical forms.

There certainly can be other medical and emotional reasons that affect school attendance.  Do not let the school tell you NO, they can’t document........insist. You can also document under the Accommodation section how your child will be provided missed school work.  If last school year or currently this is an issue, also add under the PLOP (Present Level of Performance) section. Get this information documented in multiple sections of the IEP or 504.

For severe illness, your child may also require a Health Plan, which should be outlined in the IEP as well.

I met and had lunch with Mr. Hatcher at AW’s Due Process Hearing.  This is another very sad and tragic story of abuse and neglect in Fulton County Schools.  Parents must stand together and hold the School District accountable……….

Special Education PTA Committees (SEPTA)

National PTA

Why start a Special Education PTA?
Families with children who have special needs often seek out opportunities to meet other parents in similar circumstances. Special Education PTAs (SEPTAs) provide this opportunity and often bring together families of students who attend different schools in a district under one PTA umbrella. Becoming a SEPTA provides families with an organizational structure, resources and the opportunity to be a collective voice for their child and for all children.

National PTA

http://www.pta.org/2742.htm

PTA recognizes that parents of children with special needs require some resources different from those used by parents of children without special learning needs. In an effort to assist parents of children with special needs, a growing number of Special Education PTAs (or SEPTAs) are being chartered in schools and school districts around the country. Parents of children with special needs are also engaging in existing PTAs and finding a place as a part of the total school community.

GA PTA

http://www.georgiapta.org/leadership-special-ed.html

Each local unit is strongly encouraged to have this committee. This committee recognizes and promotes each child's abilities rather than disabilities. It is not designed to be a sounding board, but is organized to help assist in the education of all children.

Parents of special needs children should advocate for starting Special Education PTA’s in their school!!  It is my understanding from National PTA that if a parent volunteers, it must be allowed…….(just in case your school opposes your forming this committee).

In 2002 at my children’s school, I started an Exceptional Children’s Committee against much adversity from our school’s administration.  I developed a PTA website that won Wrightslaw National Award for Best PTA Website http://www.fetaweb.com/best.htm#pta .  It contained disability and special education law resources for parents and school staff.  I also developed a special needs library, which contained books for our students on various disabilities and a lending library for parents and the school staff.  My committee also won State, Regional and School awards.

The Mountain Rd. PTA website has since been taken down, but below I copied my PTA Report in the hopes that others can use this information to help them in the formation of their own special needs committees.

Parents can make a difference in their schools through PTA……….VOLUNTEER!

Exceptional Children’s Committee Report

Mountain Road Elementary

The Exceptional Children’s Committee is a new committee for Mountain Road this year.  Our first goal and priority was to explain to the PTA and School what this committee’s plans were and what this committee was about.  We accomplished this by publishing in the school newsletter and on our new website the following:

#1 An Explanation of Exceptional Children - This committee addresses the needs of a diverse school population.  An exceptional child includes the gifted and talented as well as the mentally challenged; the physically handicapped, including the chronically ill; the sensorially handicapped, including the visually and hearing impaired, those with defective speech; the socially or emotionally disturbed; children with specific learning disabilities, and in some instances, disadvantaged and deprived youngsters.

#2 An Explanation of the Goals of this committee - Goals of this committee from the PTA Handbook:

  • Through recognition, acceptance and support, strive to secure for every exceptional child the highest standard of education and quality of life possible.
  • Promote and attend conferences and workshops addressing the needs of Exceptional Children.
  • Keep current information as a resource for parents on services available to Exceptional Children.
  • Encourage student to volunteer to mentor Exceptional Children.
  • Recruit teachers to encourage Exceptional student participation in projects sponsored by the PTA in Nutrition, Substance Use and Abuse, Seat belt Safety, Energy Conservation and Reflections.
  • Plan special activities to celebrate Exceptional Children’s Week.
  • Keep parents of Exceptional Children information of legislation that may affect their child.
  • Work within the community to encourage businesses to provide employment opportunities for Exceptional Children.
  • Conduct educational workshops for the parents of Exceptional Children

#3 An Explanation of our Budget - Programs budgeted to be implemented for 2001-2002:

v  Free information on various disabilities

v  Purchase of videos and books related to disabilities and giftedness

  • Activities for AD/HD Awareness Week

v  Provide teachers information about AD/HD

v  Give students information about AD/HD

  • Activities for Exceptional Children’s Week

v  Plan opportunities for learning about exceptionalities during regular education classes.

Ø  During reading, read age appropriate books on various disabilities.

Ø  For art, have a poster contest related to disabilities

Ø  During music, sing songs related to disabilities

Ø  During PE, simulate various disabilities

v  Plan a Parent & Teacher Information Conference

v  Put up Exceptional Children’s Banners

  • Activities for Mental Health Awareness Month

v  Host a Bullying and AD/HD skit performed by the NMHAG (National Mental Health Association of Georgia) puppeteer troop “Kids on the Block”

v  Provide information and resources to teachers and students pertaining to Mental Health issues.

  • Implement a web page on the Mountain Road school website pertaining to Exceptional Children which will list resources for parents and teachers.

Our second goal was to create a website to contain all kinds of pertinent and related information to Exceptional Children that parents and teachers could use as a resource.  As a result, we are happy to report that we created an “Award Winning” website which can viewed at http://mtnrdpta.home.att.net/Committees/exceptional_children.htm .  In December of 2001, Wrightslaw, a prestigious website run by two married special education attorneys devoted to the needs of exceptional children named our website as “Winner of Wrights Law’s National Best PTA Website”.  We are now getting exposure, contacts and information nationwide.  We are continuing to update and add information to our website, and encourage parents and teachers to participate by giving us more links on their children’s exceptionality areas.  Our website currently contains information about Exceptional Children, information related to different exceptionality areas, disability organizations, resource information and contacts, county and state disability contacts, conference and seminar information, and disability facts

      Our third goal was to create a special needs library for the parents, teachers and children of Mountain Road.   New disability books purchased for the children’s library includeA Boy and a Bear – Children’s Relaxation Book; Andy and His Yellow Frisbee – Autism; Ben, King of the River – Developmental Disabilities; Brian’s Bird – Visually Impaired; Bullies Are A Pain in the Brain – Bullies; Cliques, Phonies, & Other Baloney – Cliques; Dad & Me in the Morning – Hearing Impaired; Dustin’s BIG School Day – Down Syndrome; Eddie Enough! – AD/HD; Eukee The Jumpy Jumpy Elephant; I’m Somebody Too – AD/HD & Learning Differences; Many Ways to Learn – Learning Disabilities;

My Buddy – Muscular Dystrophy; Princess Pooh – Physically Handicapped; Shelley, The Hyperactive Turtle – AD/HD; The Affirmation Web – Self Esteem; The Boys’ & Girls’ Book of Dealing with Feelings – Feelings; The Don’t-give-up-Kid – Learning Disabilities;

And Zipper, the Kid with ADHD – ADHD.  New disability books purchased for the parent/teacher resource library includes:  ADHD in the Young Child, Driven to Redirection – A Guide for Parents and Teachers of Young Children with ADHD; Asperger Syndrome – A Practical Guide for Teachers; Breakthroughs – How to Reach Students with Autism (Video); Educational Care – A System for Understanding and Helping Children with Learning; Good Friends Are Hard To Find – Help Your Child Find, Make and Keep Friends; How Difficult Can This Be? – Understanding Learning Disabilities/ADHD, Richard Lavoie PBS Video; Last One Picked…First One Picked On – Learning Disabilities/ADHD & Social Skills, Richard Lavoie PBS Video; Look What You’ve Done – Learning Disabilities/ADHD & Self Esteem, PBS Video; Problems at Home and in School; Fine Motor Skills in Children with Down Syndrome; The Tough Kid Book – Practical Classroom Management Strategies; When the Chips Are Down – Learning Disabilities/ADHD & Discipline, Richard Lavoie PBS Video; and Why Don’t They Like Me? – Helping Your Child Make and Keep Friends.

Our fourth goal is to make the children, parents and teachers aware of various special needs areas and to raise awareness, tolerance and acceptance.  We are accomplishing this by advertising the important “Dates to Recognize Special Needs” such asOctober is Down Syndrome Awareness Month; October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month; November 5-10 AD/HD Awareness Week; March 3-8 Exceptional Children’s Week; April is Autism Awareness Month; and May is National Mental Health Awareness Month.  These dates are published in the school newsletter and on our website.  We also took an opportunity to use these dates to distribute information to all students and staff at Mountain Road to raise awareness for these various disability areas.  For example, during ADHD Awareness Week, we distributed to all students and staff at Mountain Road four pages of information about ADHD, including information about the disorder, lists of resources and disability organizations, information on the special education laws related to ADHD, and famous people with ADHD.   Also, in May, to celebrate National Mental Health Awareness Month, we have invited the NMHAG’s (National Mental Health Association of GA) puppeteer troop to perform two skits related to ADHD and Bullying to all the children at Mountain Road.

Our fifth goal is to celebrate Exceptional Children’s Week March 4-8 and to raise awareness for special needs children in our community.  At school for the children, we have planned opportunities for learning about exceptionalities during regular education classes by: reading age appropriate books on various disabilities during reading classes; having a poster contest related to disabilities for art; singing songs related to disabilities during music; and simulating various disabilities during PE.  We also plan to do this by hosting a parent/teacher seminar for our regional high school zone.  We have invited speakers to present information on various topics related to Exceptional Children such as:  Don Enis, GLRS (GA Learning Resource Systems) - IDEA & Section 504; Carol Sadler & Kelly Zimmerman, Coordinators CHADD (Children & Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) - In-service program for parents and teachers on ADHD, the Disability, Co-Morbid Disorders, Educational Rights, and Treatments; Sheryl Pruitt, Educational Consultant/Parkaire Consultants - Teaching children with ADHD, LD, OCD, and Tourette's; Dan Pruitt, Professional Coach/Parkaire Consultants - Coaching for neurologically impaired students in high school and college; Robbyn Laufer, OTR/L with Parkaire Consultants - Educational Benefits of Occupational Therapy; Miriam Hanson, LPC - Building Your Child's Self Esteem; Dr. Carla Cohen, Principal Mtn Rd or Ms. Penny Nugent - Multiple Intelligences; and we hope to include sessions on HomeWork Strategies & Behavior Management.

Our school believes that ALL children are EXCEPTIONAL.  Therefore our committee has consistently made attempts to have all children benefit from our committee.   We have included books in the library that any child could read and benefit from; we have distributed disability information to all children; we have included topics in our parent/teacher conference that any and all parents could benefit from; we have included all students in Exceptional Children’s Week in many areas including distributing pencils to all student’s that say “I Am Exceptional”; and we have included all student’s in the school assembly on “Bullying” & “ADHD”.  Our Exceptional Children’s slogan was developed by our School Counselor, Ms. Dottie Brown and is Don’t “Dis” My Abilities, meaning don’t “disrespect” my abilities!

Our committee is dedicated to improving the lives of all children with exceptional needs.  In order to do this and to stay current on legislation that affects these children we also volunteer and are involved with various disability organizations in the state of GA including: CHADD (Children & Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder); the Learning Disabilities Association of GA (LDAG); Parent to Parent; and Emory's "Preemie-Child" program.  We also serve on the Cherokee County PTA Exceptional Children’s Committee, the GA P-16 Teacher Quality Plan - Special/General Education Consortium, and are members of the GA-Parent Disability and Advocates listservs.
